Competition Board Grants Exemption for Joint Production between Ford and Volkswagen

The Competition Board has decided to grant an exemption for agreements between Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen AG regarding the development, procurement, and production of one-ton commercial vehicles.

In a statement from the Competition Authority, it was indicated that the Board takes a positive approach to such collaborations.

The statement highlighted that the Competition Board granted an exemption for agreements between Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen AG concerning the development, procurement, and production of one-ton commercial vehicles. It was mentioned that the agreement entails the production of the next-generation Ford Transit Custom and Ford Tourneo Custom families of one-ton medium commercial diesel, rechargeable hybrid electric, and fully electric variations at Ford Otomotiv Sanayi AŞ’s facilities in Kocaeli, primarily targeting export markets.

Furthermore, the statement outlined Ford’s projected investment of €1.39 billion and an increase in production capacity from 180,000 to 405,000 units of one-ton commercial vehicles between 2020 and 2025. The implementation of Ford’s approximately 11-year production plan is anticipated.

The statement also provided information on the rationale behind the Board’s exemption decision, emphasizing its support for collaborations contributing to growth and employment. It reiterated the Board’s support for Turkey’s efforts to become an international and regional production hub in the automotive sector.
