Meat prices increased by 50% in 2 months

Meat prices have increased by 50% in the last 2 months. Ankara Chamber of Butchers President Yalcindag evaluated the increase with the words, “The increase that should have taken place in a year has taken place in 2 months.”

Meat prices have increased by 50% since the beginning of the year. Both the seller and the consumer reacted to the increase in prices.

Making a statement on the subject, President of Ankara Chamber of Butchers, Fazli Yalcindag, said, “The increase that should have taken place in a year has taken place in 2 months.”

Stating that the butchers were affected negatively by this situation, Yalcindag said, “Almost every week, we get ₺5-₺10 price increases for our purchases. Carcass prices, which were in the ₺120-₺130 band at the beginning of the year, have reached ₺175-₺180 today.”

Reacting to the suppliers, Yalcindag said:

“What has changed since the beginning of the year? We ask the suppliers, and they say, ‘We get a price increase every week.’ They say that there has been a hike in the slaughtering prices, that the breeders want more prices, and they have to reflect this. It disturbs everyone, especially the consumers and us the butchers.”

NEARLY 8 THOUSAND ANIMALS DIED IN THE EARTHQUAKE

Yalcindag stated that the region where the earthquake disaster took place is important in terms of animal husbandry, but that there can be no reason for the increase in this rate, “According to the information we received from official sources, 7-8 thousand cattle died. But this is not a number that can cause such a price increase. Slaughter continues there, slaughtering and wholesale meat sales continue. For me, it is a duty to raise these prices all of a sudden, there is no other explanation.”

“THEY ARE EXPECTING TO IMPORT MEAT”

Yalcindag also touched upon the expectation of meat imports in the sector. “There are people waiting for an environment to import from abroad even if it rises a little higher.” Yalcindag said:

“We will experience 2010 again at the point of import. The cost of this will be heavy for everyone. As a precaution, a lot needs to be done. We need to change our consumption habits, we need to increase our consumption in terms of sheep and goats. There is no strong rope to hug other than small cattle. We will increase the share of this in production and consumption, there is no other way. I hope there is a stopping point in the increase in prices.”

On the other hand, the rapid increase in prices caused a density in the Meat and Dairy Institution stores, where meat is sold cheaply.

In front of the Meat and Milk Institution Branch in Beylikduzu, Istanbul, a queue of meters long was formed. It was learned that minced meat sold for ₺270 at the butcher’s office was sold for ₺100, and red meat sold between ₺150 and ₺330 for prices ranging from ₺36 to ₺116.
