Natural gas agreement signed between Turkiye and Hungary

An agreement was reached between the two countries on the export of natural gas from Turkiye to Hungary. With the agreement, for the first time, Turkiye will export gas through pipelines to a non-border European country.

In the statement made by Pipelines and Oil Transport Inc. (BOTAS), it was stated that a historical natural gas export agreement was signed between BOTAS and the Hungarian state company MVM CEEnergy in line with Turkiye’s strategic goals in the field of energy and its vision to become the central country in natural gas.

In the statement, at the ceremony held in Hungary yesterday, it was reported that the historical agreement was signed by BOTAS General Manager and Chairman of the Board Burhan Ozcan and MVM CEEnergy Senior Manager Laszlo Fritsch under the auspices of Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, and Gabor Czepek, Undersecretary for Public Administration of the Hungarian Ministry of Energy and Chairman of MVM CEEnergy.

“It will also make a significant contribution to Europe’s energy supply security”

It was stated in the statement that natural gas shipments from Turkiye to Hungary are expected to start from next year, and that the agreement includes cooperation on the use of Turkiye’s LNG infrastructure and natural gas storage facilities of the two countries within the framework of their common interests.

In the statement the following was said, “BOTAS, which is the guarantee of our country’s natural gas supply security, will also make a significant contribution to the energy supply security of Europe with the agreement, which is a first in the export of natural gas through pipelines to a European country that does not have a border with Turkiye.”

Turkiye signed an agreement with Bulgaria in January to export 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually for 13 years.
