Nissan’s Next-Gen Patrol SUV: A Leap from V8 to Twin-Turbo V6

Japanese automobile giant, Nissan, is set to redefine the SUV landscape with its impending unveiling of the next-generation Patrol SUV. In a significant departure from the norm, the new Patrol will be powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine, replacing the naturally aspirated V8 common in earlier models. The new Patrol is slated for a US debut in mid-2024, with Australian markets expected to receive the model at a later, yet unspecified date.

The Evolution of the Nissan Patrol

Despite the current version of the Patrol exhibiting strong sales figures, bolstered by the addition of a locally tuned Warrior variant, the model is nearing the end of its lifecycle. The Y62-series, in production since 2010, is set to give way to the new design. North American dealers who have previewed the upcoming model describe it as embracing a more rugged aesthetic, reminiscent of a ‘Range Rover-like’ styling. This includes sharper lines and large screens with upgraded finishes inside.

Embracing Industry Trends

Nissan’s decision to transition from a V8 to a twin-turbo V6 engine aligns with the broader industry trends. Other market competitors, including the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and the Ford Expedition, have also opted for similar engine modifications. Along with the engine upgrade, the new Patrol promises to offer the ‘latest’ in driver-assist and convenience technology.

Infiniti QX80 and Market Expectations

The luxury variant of the new Patrol, the Infiniti QX80, shares its body with the Patrol. The design of the QX80 has been previewed by the QX Monograph concept. However, Australian markets won’t be seeing the Infiniti QX80, given Infiniti’s market withdrawal in 2020. As for the pricing of the new Patrol, it’s expected to be competitive, though it’s likely to approach or possibly exceed the $100,000 mark, thus narrowing the gap with its rival, the LandCruiser 300 Series. Along with a new engine and design, the next-generation Patrol is anticipated to bring enhanced driving dynamics, chassis, and infotainment system improvements.
