Russia’s Energy Exports Declined in 2023

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Aleksandr Novak, shared information about the country’s energy sector during a presentation at the meeting of the Federation Council in the capital, Moscow.

According to the presentation, Russia’s oil production decreased by 0.8% in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching 530.6 million tons. Meanwhile, oil exports declined by 3.3%, totaling 234.4 million tons.

During the same period, Russia’s natural gas exports via pipelines decreased by 29.9%, reaching 99.6 billion cubic meters, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports also dropped by 1.9%, totaling 45.4 billion cubic meters.

The country’s natural gas production saw a 5.5% decrease, amounting to 636.9 billion cubic meters. However, domestic natural gas supply increased by 2.8%, reaching 500 billion cubic meters. Coal production declined by 1.1%, reaching 438 million tons, and coal exports also decreased by 3.9%, totaling 212.5 million tons.

As Russia’s energy exports to Europe significantly decreased due to sanctions, the country aims to compensate for this loss by increasing exports to Asian markets. Russia, which boosted its oil exports to China and India last year, intends to enhance its global market share in natural gas through investments in LNG and new pipelines.
