Automotive production increased by 13% to 943 thousand 609 units in the 8 months of this year compared to the same period of the previous year, and automobile production increased by 21% to 599 thousand 915 units.
Automotive Industry Association (OSD) announced production and export figures and market data for the January-August period of 2023.
Accordingly, in the 8-month period of the year, total automotive production increased by 13% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 943 thousand 609. Automobile production was recorded as 599 thousand 915 units, with an increase of 21%. Including tractor production, total production reached 981 thousand 897 units.
In the 8-month period of the year, commercial vehicle production increased by 2% compared to the same period of the previous year. During this period, production in the heavy commercial vehicle group increased by 27%, while production in the light commercial vehicle group remained parallel to the previous year. In addition, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 72 in the said period.
Capacity utilization rates on a vehicle group basis were 71 in light vehicles (automobile + light commercial vehicle), 89 in the truck group, 50 in the bus-midibus group and 75 in the tractor.
Exports increased by 17% and reached $23.3 billion
In the 8-month period of the year, automotive exports increased by 11% in terms of units compared to the same period last year, reaching 656 thousand 750 units. In this period, automobile exports increased by 26% compared to the same period of the previous year, while commercial vehicle exports decreased by 8%. Tractor exports increased by 13% compared to the same period in 2022, reaching 13 thousand 88 units.
According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly, total automotive industry exports maintained its top place in the sectoral export rankings with 16% in the 8 months of this year.
According to Uludag Exporters’ Associations (UIB) data, total automotive exports in the 8 months of this year increased by 17% compared to the same period of 2022, reaching $23.3 billion. In euro terms, it increased by 16% to €21.5 billion. During this period, main industry exports increased by 21% and supply industry exports increased by 12% in dollar terms.
Market approached 800,000 units in 8 months
On the other hand, the statement also included the previously announced results of ODMD regarding the automotive market. Accordingly, in the 8 months of 2023, the total market increased by 63% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 788 thousand 197 units.
During this period, the automobile market also increased by 64% and reached 582 thousand 419 units. Looking at the commercial vehicle market, in the 8 months of the year, 60% growth was achieved in the total commercial vehicle market, 32% in the heavy commercial vehicle market, and 66% in the light commercial vehicle market, compared to the same period of the previous year.
In the 8 months of 2023, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was 31%, and the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 50%, compared to the same period last year.
