Sea snail exports increased by 67% compared to last year and reached $14 million 419 thousand 13

Sea snails were exported from Turkiye to 9 countries, especially the Republic of South Korea, in 9 months of the year. Exports of sea snails in January-September 2023 reached $14 million 419 thousand 13, an increase of 67% compared to the same period last year, which was $8 million 627 thousand 19.

Sea snails, which are not consumed in Turkiye, are caught entirely for export.

Exports of sea snails in January-September 2023 reached $14 million 419 thousand 13, an increase of 67% compared to the same period last year, which was $8 million 627 thousand 19. The amount of exported products increased from 1136 tons to 1326 tons.

In 9 months of the year, sea snails were sold to the Republic of South Korea, the People’s Republic of China, Japan, Spain, Taiwan, Ukraine, Georgia, Romania and Azerbaijan.

63% of the country’s exports come from the Black Sea

63% of the country’s sea snail exports were from the Black Sea.

Sea snails worth $9 million 140 thousand 160 were exported from the Black Sea to 6 countries, especially South Korea, in 9 months of the year.

In the same period last year, sea snails worth $5 million 712 thousand 218 were exported from the region. Thus, sea snail exports from the Black Sea increased by 60% in value compared to the same period last year.

“The hunting of the product needs to be given importance”

DKIB Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors Ahmet Hamdi Gurdogan said that converting a product that is not consumed in Turkiye into value and exporting it is an important success.

Pointing out that the income from sea snail exports is increasing day by day, Gurdogan stated that importance should be given to the hunting of the product in parallel with the increase in exports.

Gurdogan pointed out that he has high expectations from the export of the product and said, “In order to further develop exports, the product should be subject to different legislation than other marine creatures and the obstacles to hunting should be removed by making arrangements for production and hunting legislation.”
