Turkiye: Automotive production reaches 1.5 million in 2023

Automotive production increased by 9% compared to the previous year in 2023, reaching 1 million 468 thousand 393 units.

Automotive Industry Association (OSD) announced the production and export figures and market data for 2023. Accordingly, in 2023, automotive production increased by 9% compared to the previous year, reaching 1 million 468 thousand 393 units.

Automobile production increased by 18% and reached 952 thousand 667 units. The total figure with tractor production reached 1 million 525 thousand 963 units.

In 2023, commercial vehicle production decreased by 5% and light commercial vehicle production decreased by 7% compared to the same period of the previous year. In the heavy commercial vehicle group, production increased by 16%. During this period, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 74%.

Capacity utilization rates on a vehicle group basis were 74% in light vehicles (cars + light commercial vehicles), 91% in the truck group, 54% in the bus-midibus group and 75% in the tractor.

Exports increased by 13% and reached $35.7 billion

In 2023, automotive exports increased by 5% in terms of units compared to 2022, reaching 1 million 18 thousand 247. During this period, automobile exports increased by 16% compared to the same period of the previous year, while commercial vehicle exports decreased by 11%. Tractor exports also decreased by 8% compared to 2022, reaching 16 thousand 752.

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly, total automotive industry exports maintained its top place in the sectoral export rankings with a share of 16% in 2023.

According to Uludağ Exporters’ Associations (UIB) data, total automotive exports in 2023 increased by 13% compared to 2022, reaching $35.7 billion. In euro terms, it increased by 10% to €33 billion. During this period, main industry exports increased by 16% and supply industry exports increased by 10% in dollar terms.

The total market grew by 55% in 2023

Looking at the sales side, last year the total market grew by 55% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 1 million 283 thousand 952 units.

During this period, automobile sales increased by 63% and reached 967 thousand 341 units. Looking at the commercial vehicle market, an increase of 35% in total commercial vehicle sales, 17% in the heavy commercial vehicle market and 39% in the light commercial vehicle market was recorded in 2023 compared to the previous year.

In 2023, compared to 2022, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was 32%, and the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 46%.
