Turkiye: $8 million revenue from sea snail exports

January-June 2023 exports of sea snails, which have no consumption in Turkiye and are caught only for export, increased by 95% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached $7 million 954 thousand.

According to the compilation made by the Eastern Black Sea Exporters’ Association (DKIB), sea snails were sold to 7 countries in the first 6 months of the year.

Sea snail exports, which were recorded as 646 tons in January-June 2022 as $4 million 84 thousand 912, earned $7 million 954 thousand 242 in the same period of this year, corresponding to 794 tons.

The 6-month export of sea snails, which are not consumed in Turkiye and are only caught for export, increased by 23% in quantity and 95% in value.

Sea snails, whose exports are increasing every year, received the highest demand from the Republic of South Korea in the first half of the year.

Sea snails were sold to the People’s Republic of China, Japan, Spain, Taiwan, Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as the Republic of South Korea.

Black Sea exports also increased by 98%

The Black Sea Region carried $4 million 743 thousand 855 of Turkiye’s sea snail exports.

In the first half of the year, $4 million 743 thousand 855 were earned from the Black Sea for 438 tons of products exported to the Republic of South Korea, the People’s Republic of China, Japan, Taiwan and Georgia.

Sea snail exports from the region increased by 19% in quantity and 98% in value, compared to the first 6 months of 2022, which earned $2 million 395 thousand 23 for 367 tons.

“Our sea snail exports are getting higher and higher”

Ahmet Hamdi Gurdogan, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of DKIB, said that it is important to export a product that is not consumed in Turkiye by converting it into value.

Congratulating the exporters for their success, Gurdogan said, “Our sea snail exports are getting higher and higher. We believe that we will reach much better points in the coming days.”

Stating that it is important for the public to adapt the legislation according to today’s conditions and to pave the way for exporters, Gurdogan said, “It is important to determine the hunting seasons according to each product in terms of ensuring the ecological balance. We believe that our exports will increase even more with the regulation to be made in this context.”
