Turkiye: Export and import unit value indices rose in 2022

The export unit value index increased by 7.9% last year, and the import unit value index increased by 23.9% compared to the previous year.

Turkish Statistical Institute announced the foreign trade indices for the period of December 2022.

Accordingly, the export unit value index increased by 7% in December 2022 compared to the same month of the previous year. In this period, the index recorded an increase of 12.4% in food, beverages and tobacco, 1.9% in raw materials (excluding fuel), 27.5% in fuels and 5.6% in the manufacturing industry (excluding food, beverages and tobacco).

Export unit value index increased by 4.9% in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. In 2022, the index increased by 7.9% compared to the previous year.

The import unit value index rose 8.6% year-on-year in December 2022. Compared to the same month of the previous year, while the index increased by 0.3% in food, beverages and tobacco, by 33.6% in fuels, by 1.3% in the manufacturing industry (excluding food, beverages and tobacco), it decreased by 8.8% in raw materials (excluding fuel).

The import unit value index increased by 9.2% in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. In 2022, the index increased by 23.9% compared to the previous year.

Export quantity index increased by 4.8%

The export quantity index decreased by 3.7% in December 2022 compared to the same month of the previous year. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the index decreased by 3.6% in food, beverages and tobacco, and by 4.4% in the manufacturing industry (excluding food, beverages, tobacco), raw materials (excluding fuel) increased by 19.2% and fuels increased by 10.5%.

The export quantity index decreased by 2.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The index increased by 4.8% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

The import quantity index increased by 3.3% on an annual basis in December 2022. Compared to the same month of the previous year while the index decreased by 3.2% in food, beverages and tobacco, 32.9% in raw materials (excluding fuel) and 14.6% in fuels, it increased by 6.1% in the manufacturing industry (excluding food, beverages and tobacco).

The import quantity index increased by 8.3% in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The index increased by 8.2% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

Seasonally and calendar adjusted data

According to the seasonally and calendar adjusted series, the export quantity index increased by 8.6% in December 2022 compared to November 2022 and became 158.3. According to the calendar adjusted series, the export quantity index, which was 160.5 in December of 2021, increased by 0.3% to 160.9 in December of 2022.

According to the seasonally and calendar adjusted series, the import quantity index, which was 118.7 in November last year, increased by 2.9% and became 122.2 in December. According to the calendar adjusted series, the import quantity index, which was 124.3 in December 2021, increased by 6.5% and was determined as 132.4 in December 2022.

The terms of trade, which was calculated by dividing the export unit value index by the import unit value index and calculated as 82.8 in December 2021, were recorded as 81.5 in December 2022 with a decrease of 1.3 points.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the terms of foreign trade decreased by 3.2 points compared to the same period of the previous year and became 77.9. The terms of foreign trade decreased by 11.1 points to 74.8 in 2022 compared to the previous year.
