Automotive sales record continued in May in Turkiye

While the automobile and light commercial vehicle market grew by 70.9% in May this year, to 111 thousand 356 units, this was recorded as the highest May of all time.

According to the May data of the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkiye increased by 60.5% in the January-May period of 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year, and amounted to 445 thousand 6 units.

In the said period, automobile sales reached 340 thousand 37 with an increase of 58.8%, and light commercial vehicle sales became 104 thousand 969 with an increase of 66.3%.

Looking at the month of May of this year, the sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles increased by 70.9% compared to May 2022 and amounted to 111 thousand 356. In May, automobile sales increased by 68.5% compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 87 thousand 218, while light commercial vehicle sales increased by 79.9% to 24 thousand 138.

Thus, the record series in automotive sales continued in May as well.

Looking at the 10-year average sales in May, automobile and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 69.1%, automobile sales by 69.2% and light commercial vehicle sales by 69.1%.

Sales by segment and body types

In the January-May 2023 period, when the automobile market is evaluated according to the segments, 89.3% of the market was composed of vehicles in the A, B and C segments with low tax rates.

C segment cars had a share of 54.7% with 185 thousand 916 units, while the share of B segment cars was 33.9% with 115 thousand 236 units.

When the automobile market is evaluated according to body types, the most preferred body type was SUV cars with a share of 45.8%. SUVs were followed by sedans with a share of 29.7% and hatchbacks with a share of 22.1%.

76% of sales are automatic transmission

In the said period, automatic transmission cars had a share of 76.2% from total sales with 259 thousand 95 units, while the share of manual transmission cars remained at 23.8% with 80 thousand 942.

According to body type in the light commercial vehicle market, van body type was the most preferred body type with a share of 80.5%, followed by pickup truck and minibus body types with 7.6%.

On the other hand, looking at the sales figures of the brands, it was seen that 306 sales were reported for Togg’s first model T10X.
