The amount of local tourists’ travel expenses in the third quarter of last year amounted to ₺113 billion 996 million 644 thousand, an increase of 79.9% compared to the same period of 2022.
Turkish Statistical Institute announced “household domestic tourism” data for the July-September 2023 period.
Accordingly, in the third quarter of last year, 19 million 467 thousand people traveled domestically. The total number of trips made within the country, with one or more overnight stays, increased by 1.7% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 23 million 780 thousand.
Travelers spent 220 million 969 thousand nights in this quarter. The average number of overnight stays was 9.3, and the average expenditure per trip was ₺4 thousand 794.
The amount of local tourists’ travel expenditures in the country increased by 79.9% in the third quarter of last year compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching ₺113 billion 996 million 644 thousand.
Of these expenditures, 89.7% with ₺102 billion 242 million 978 thousand were personal expenses, and 10.3% with ₺11 billion 753 million 665 thousand were package tour expenditures.
In the said period, the largest share in total travel expenses was food and beverage with 31.7%, transportation with 23.5% and accommodation with 21.7%. When the change rates of expenditure types compared to the same period of 2022 are examined, there was an increase of 79.9% in food and beverage expenditures, 51.9% in transportation expenditures and 158.7% in accommodation expenditures.
They stayed at a “friend’s or relative’s house”
In the July-September 2023 period, trips to visit relatives ranked first with 49.3%. This was followed by “travel, entertainment, holiday” travel with 46%, and “health” travel with 2.3%.
Those who traveled in the quarter in question mostly stayed at “friends’ or relatives’ houses” with 137 million 377 thousand overnight stays. According to accommodation types, “own house” ranked second in the number of overnight stays with 41 million 562 thousand overnight stays, while “hotel” ranked third with 20 million 631 thousand overnight stays.
