Sea snail exports exceeded $7.2 million in the first 5 months of the year in Turkiye

Sea snail exports from Turkiye in the first 5 months of the year increased by 159% and reached $7 million 235 thousand 437.

Eastern Black Sea Exporters Union Deputy Chairman of the Board Ahmet Hamdi Gurdogan said that 723 tons of sea snails were exported to 7 countries in the first 5 months of the year from Turkiye.

Stating that $7 million 235 thousand 437 were gained from the foreign sales in question, Gurdogan said, “In the same period of last year, $2 million 796 thousand 325 were obtained, corresponding to 488 tons. Accordingly, exports increased by 48% in quantity and 159% in value.”

Emphasizing that the most sea snails are exported to the Republic of South Korea with $2 million 636 thousand 526, Gurdogan stated that this country is followed by the People’s Republic of China with $1 million 727 thousand 879 and Japan with $1 million 534 thousand 884.

56% of the Turkiye’s exports come from the Black Sea

Noting that 56% of Turkiye’s sea snail exports are made from the Black Sea, Gurdogan noted that 376 tons of sea snails were sold from the region to the Republic of South Korea, the People’s Republic of China, Japan and Georgia for $4 million 25 thousand 405.

Gurdogan underlined that sea snails are an important export item although they are not consumed in Turkiye, and stated that they have high expectations from the export of the product in question.

Gurdogan stated that policies should be reviewed and revised according to today’s conditions in order to further develop exports and to provide more foreign currency inflow from sea snails that do not consume in the domestic market. He added that the snail fishing season should be rearranged in order to investigate the effects of the product on other sea creatures and to ensure the natural balance.
