Turkiye ranks second in the world in industrial design applications

Last year, Turkiye ranked 2nd in the world after China with 80 thousand 559 industrial design applications.

Turkiye’s recent investments in R&D and design centers have borne fruit. In this context, Turkiye, which has 1623 R&D and design centers, has accelerated its work in this field.

According to the 2023 World Intellectual Property Indicators Report published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), worldwide industrial design applications decreased by 3% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

The number of applications dropped for the first time since 2014

While 1.1 million industrial design applications were made worldwide last year, this figure decreased for the first time since 2014.

In industrial design, especially in China, 9 thousand 500 fewer applications were received last year compared to 2021, while applications decreased by 8 thousand 19 in South Korea and 5 thousand 804 in Iran.

Industrial design activities from China, Turkiye, Germany, the USA and South Korea constituted 75.6% of the global design number last year.

China is on the top of the list

China, which is the most active country in the world in industrial design applications, is at the top with 841 thousand 164 applications. China was followed by Turkiye with 80 thousand 559, Germany with 70 thousand 346, USA with 67 thousand 349 and South Korea with 62 thousand 14.

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which is among the top 5 in industrial design, ranked first in applications processed in 2022 with 96.7%. This was followed by England with 94.8%, China with 90.6%, Turkiye with 89%and South Korea with 85.7%.

Turkiye is also on the rise in the number of equivalent designs

Last year, the highest number of equivalent application designs was in China with 1.4 million. This was followed by applicants in Germany with 489 thousand 507, Italy with 369 thousand 347, the USA with 366 thousand 686 and France with 217 thousand 619.

While Spain increased the number of equivalent designs by 16.5% and Italy by 5.4% in 2022, Bulgaria and Turkiye were the countries that recorded the highest increase in the number of equivalent designs with 120.6% and 20.3%.

On the other hand, the sharpest decrease was observed in South Korean offices with 11.6%. There was a decrease of 9.5% in Germany, 6.9% in China and 6.5% in the USA.

4 industrial sectors stood out

Four sectors worldwide stood out for industrial design applications in 2022. These were furniture and household goods with 17.2%, textiles and accessories with 15.6%, tools and machinery with 12.4%, and electricity and lighting with 9.1%.

In furniture and household goods, Iran with 23.6%, Germany with 22.5% and Brazil with 22.2% constituted a significant portion of the applications.

In the textile and accessories sector, Germany with 25.9%, India with 21.8% and South Korea with 20.4% were at the top of the applications.

Advertising and tools and machinery were the main sectors for Turkiye with 31.6% and EUIPO with 21.7%. In Turkiye, applications in the furniture and household goods, textile and accessory sectors also stood out.

Turkiye ranks second in domestic design applications in the last 2 years

When the applications of the countries in the last 10 years were examined, it was seen that Spain ranked 10th with 22 thousand 657 design applications in 2013.

Switzerland ranked 9th with 31 thousand 425 applications, Japan ranked 8th with 40 thousand 508, Turkiye ranked 7th with 43 thousand 57, USA ranked 6th with 49 thousand 785, Italy ranked 5th with 52 thousand 892, France ranked 4th with 71 thousand 54, South Korea ranked 3rd with 72 thousand 422, Germany ranked 2nd with 88 thousand 363 and China ranked 1st with 560 thousand 726.

In applications in 2021, Turkiye was in the top 2 with 79 thousand 901 and China with 841 thousand 695. While the ranking did not change last year, Turkiye with 80 thousand 559 applications and China with 841 thousand 164 applications maintained their places in the top 2.

Evaluation from Minister Kacir

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacir, in his post on his social media account, stated that Turkiye ranks 2nd in the world in the number of domestic design applications as of 2022, and said, “Our goal is to strengthen the design, brand, added value chain.”
