Turkish Statistical Institute announced waste statistics for 2022.

Accordingly, a total of 109.2 million tons of waste, 29.4 million tons of which was hazardous, was generated in manufacturing industry workplaces, mining enterprises, thermal power plants, OIZs and households in 2022.

A total of 28 million tons of waste, 5.4 million tons of which was hazardous, was collected in manufacturing industry workplaces. 63.2% of this waste was sold or sent to licensed waste processing facilities, 14.5% was recovered on-site, 13.5% was directed to landfill facilities, 3.3% was stored at the workplace, 3.1% was collected by municipality or OIZ administrations, 2% was sent to incineration or incineration facilities, 0.3% was used as filling material or was recycled into nature, 0.1% was disposed of by other methods.

26.3 million tons of waste was generated in mining operations, excluding stripping material/waste. 99.99% of the total 860.6 million tons of waste generated, including pickling material/rust, consisted of mineral waste. 76.1% of the total waste was disposed of in waste areas, tailings dams or regular storage facilities, 20.9% was filled back into the pit, and 3% was recovered or disposed of by other methods.

27.8 million tons of waste was generated in thermal power plants

A total of 27.8 million tons of waste, 10.5 thousand tons of which was hazardous, was generated in thermal power plants. 82.6% of the total non-hazardous waste was ash and slag waste, and 17.4% was other waste. While 87.9% of the total waste was disposed of in the ash mountain and ash dam or regular storage facilities, 11.4% was sent to licensed facilities or used to backfill mines/quarries, and 0.7% was disposed of by other methods.

As a result of infrastructure services, wastewater treatment and similar administrative activities of OIZ directorates, 323 thousand tons of waste, 127 thousand tons of which were hazardous, were generated. 8 thousand tons of this waste was recovered or temporarily stored within the OIZ, 243 thousand tons was recovered outside the OIZ, and 72 thousand tons was disposed of within or outside the OIZ. 63.4% of the disposed waste was obtained in regular landfill facilities, 21.1% in municipality/OIZ dumps, and 15.5% by other methods.

It was observed that waste services were provided in 1389 of the total 1391 municipalities. Of the 30.3 million tons of waste collected in the municipalities where this service was provided, 85.9% was sent to waste processing facilities, 13.5% was sent to municipal dumps, while 0.6% was disposed of by burning in the open, buried, or dumped into streams or land. The average daily amount of waste collected per person in municipalities was calculated as 1.03 kilograms.

It was determined that 348 thousand tons (on a dry matter basis) of wastewater treatment sludge were generated in wastewater treatment facilities operated by municipalities.

133.2 million tons of waste were processed in waste processing facilities

Of the 133.2 million tons of waste processed in waste disposal and recovery facilities, 81.4 million tons were eliminated and 51.7 million tons were recycled.

81 million tons of waste was disposed of in regular storage facilities and 450 thousand tons of waste in incineration facilities.

Energy was obtained by burning 3.2 million tons of waste in co-incineration facilities with a waste recycling license. While 120 thousand tons of waste was recycled in compost facilities, a total of 48.5 million tons of waste such as metal, plastic, paper and minerals were generated in other recycling facilities.

Within the scope of waste statistics, data is compiled from all municipalities in Turkiye, manufacturing industry workplaces with 50 or more employees, all active thermal power plants with an installed power of 100 megawatts and above, mining enterprises that declared production for the reference year to the General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs, all waste disposal and recovery facilities with a license or temporary activity certificate, and regular storage, incineration and compost facilities operated by or on behalf of municipalities, even if they do not have a license, and all OIZ directorates with completed infrastructure.
