Amateur fishermen in İstanbul were content during the holiday season

Taking advantage of the Ramadan holiday, citizens who arrived early in the morning with their fishing lines at the Emirgan coast in Sarıyer had a fruitful day.

It was observed that the lines cast into the sea came out full of horse mackerel. Citizens filled the buckets on the banks with the fish they caught.

Some fishermen’s lines getting tangled with each other and others jokingly saying to those catching a lot of fish, “You’ve emptied the sea, didn’t leave anything for us,” led to enjoyable moments.

Kamil Vakit, who has been engaged in amateur fishing for about 26 years, said there was a density of fish before the holiday, so they had a fruitful day.

Vakit mentioned that windy weather is effective in fishing, saying, “The wind changes the flow and direction of the water. As fishermen, we act accordingly. When the wind makes the water flow to the right, we all walk to the right. Mackerels go down according to the temperature of the water in cold weather and come up to sunbathe in sunny weather. We cast our lines not too far but to nearby areas.”

Vakit said he caught about 10 kilograms of fish yesterday, cooking some for themselves and selling some to those who wanted.

“I will cook these, neighbors will eat” Amateur fisherman Hasan Özbey said he filled half of his bucket with fish on the shore where he arrived in the morning.

Özbey, describing that there are many fish today, said, “The fish are a bit small but nice. There have been quite nice fish for about 15 days, they have increased. Before that, the current was a bit sluggish. Normally, this place gets crowded but not to this extent. The holiday has an effect. There’s no competition here, everyone gets their share. I will cook these, neighbors will eat. We will all share together.”

Turan Kalyoncu, who came to fish to make use of his day off, said that masters don’t really want novices with them.

Kalyoncu said, “They are right, we are just tangling the line. Eventually, we will become masters too. They are helping us, showing us how to tie the line. I will eat the fish I catch with my grandson.”
