The number of “full electric” car sales in Turkiye reached 20 thousand 255 in the first 4 months of the year, an increase of 273% compared to the same period of 2023.
According to information compiled from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) data, total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles across the country increased by 11.3% on an annual basis in the January-April period, reaching 371 thousand 438 units.
While the number of automobile sales increased by 16.62% to 294 thousand 837, the number of light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 5.2% to 76 thousand 601.
Gasoline cars ranked in the first place
In the said period, in the Turkish automobile market sales number ranking, gasoline cars took the first place with 192 thousand 786, and hybrid cars took the second place with 43 thousand 845.
The number of diesel car sales was 32 thousand 676, and the number of autogas car sales was 2 thousand 428. Sales of fully electric cars that run only on electricity were recorded as 20 thousand 255.
When vehicles with a system that provides power to the wheels (extended range) by running an electric motor with a gasoline engine generator to charge the battery in the vehicle are included, the number of electric car sales increased to 23 thousand 102. Extended range cars are also included in the “electric” class according to the Customs Tariff Statistics Position.
The decline in diesel and autogas car sales continues
As of the end of April, there was a 14.1% increase in gasoline car sales, a 27.3% decrease in diesel cars and a 26.5% decrease in autogas cars compared to the same period in 2023. During this period, hybrid car sales increased by 56.3% and fully electric car sales increased by 273%.
It is stated that the main reason for the decrease in diesel car sales is that global manufacturers continue to end the production of diesel cars, thus no new diesel cars are introduced to the market.
Market share of fully electric cars is 6.9%
The share of gasoline cars in sales, which was 66.8% in the first 4 months of last year, decreased to 65.4% in the same period this year. The share of diesel cars decreased from 17.8% to 11.1%, and the share of autogas cars decreased from 1.3% to 0.8%.
In the January-April period, the share of total sales increased from 2.1% to 6.9% for fully electric cars and from 11.1% to 14.9% for hybrids. When the cars are considered as fully electric, extended range electric and hybrid, it is seen that 22.7% of the total market consists of vehicles with electric engines.
