Turkiye’s Card Payment Volume Approaches ₺1.2 Trillion Milestone Amid Rising Card Usage

According to Interbank Card Center card payment data, as of March, the number of credit cards in Turkiye was 121.4 million, the number of debit cards was 192 million and the number of prepaid cards was 93.3 million.

Compared to March 2023, there was a 17% increase in the number of credit cards, a 10% increase in the number of debit cards and a 23% increase in the number of prepaid cards. The total number of cards increased by 15% on an annual basis, reaching 406.7 million.

₺991.8 billion of card payments were made with credit cards. The total amount of payments made with credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards in March increased by 126% compared to the same month of the previous year and reached ₺1 trillion 181.4 billion.

Of the card payments, ₺991.8 billion were made with credit cards, ₺167.8 billion with debit cards, and ₺21.8 billion with prepaid cards.

According to the news of Dunya newspaper, there was an annual increase of 138% in payments by credit card, 71% in payments by debit card, and 157% in payments by prepaid cards.

The amount of online card payments increased by 135% to ₺355 billion.

The total number of payments made with credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards in March increased by 25% compared to the same month last year, reaching 1.45 billion.

Numerically, 817.7 million of card payments were made with credit cards, while debit cards were used for 518.2 million payments and prepaid cards were used for 116.9 million payments.

There was a 27% increase in the number of payments made with credit cards, a 15% increase in the number of payments made with debit cards, and a 59% increase in the number of payments made with prepaid cards.

The amount of online card payments increased by 135% in March compared to the same month last year, reaching ₺355 billion. In terms of amount, the share of online card payments in the total amount was 30%.

The number of online card payments increased by 20% compared to the same month last year, reaching 219.6 million. The share of card payments made online in the total number of payments was recorded as 16%.

The number of contactless payments made with cards increased by 38% annually, reaching 916 million. The contactless payment amount was calculated as ₺327.2 billion, an increase of 155% compared to the same month last year. In March, nearly 4 out of every 5 in-store card payments were made contactless.
