Minister Donmez: The natural gas project in the Black Sea will be one of the important actors of Turkiye’s energy independence story

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Donmez stated that the natural gas project in the Black Sea will be one of the most important actors in Turkiye’s energy independence story.

Minister Donmez met with Melih Han Bilgin, General Manager of Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO), in the Filyos Natural Gas Processing Facility region, and received information about the activities from the authorities.

Donmez, who also examined the ship “Strength”, which will mainly take part in submarine operations, said in his statement here that they came to Filyos to inspect the works on site at frequent intervals and that the work at the Sakarya Gas Field was progressing at full speed under three main headings.

Noting that the drilling completion works in the wells have been completed to a large extent and the progress rate in the works on the seabed has reached the level of 90% as of now, Donmez reminded that the pipelines were completed last year.

Donmez stated that most of the operations have been completed at the Filyos Natural Gas Processing Facility, which will process the gas, and said, “We were here last night, we went to the field. We also met with our colleagues. The number of employees is increasing every day. We have 7,300 employees on the land side, and we provide these services with a total of 9,500 people, 2,200 on the sea side. This project will be one of the most important actors in Turkiye’s energy independence story. We believe this. Hopefully, we want to bring this gas to our nation in a very short time. The motivation of our teams is complete and on point. If nothing goes wrong, I hope it will be put into service on the date we planned.”

Explaining that many works are carried out on the sea side as well as on land, Donmez said, “We need special ships with special qualities. This ship, which we call Strength, has joined our fleet to carry out operations on the seabed.”

“Our three deep-sea drilling vessels continue their operations”

Minister Donmez stated that more than 50 ships are working in Sakarya Gas Field and continued as follows:

“The ship we named “Mukavemet” also came to our port in a very short time. Here there are equipment equipped to place heavy tonnage equipment on the seabed. We have two cranes, one of which is 150 tons and the other 40 tons. An underwater platform is being prepared for underwater robots, which we also call ROV. We carry out operations at a depth of 2,200 meters remotely over ships, through private operators. With the precision of a surgeon, these operators and engineers have become able to perform these operations on the ship without human touch. On this occasion, I wish all the crew and captain of the ship all the best in their work. Currently, our three deep-sea drilling vessels Fatih, Kanuni and Yavuz are continuing their operations. Our friends work with great dedication. Sometimes they spend days, weeks away from their families, here with us. They want to bring this gas to our nation as soon as possible. That’s their biggest motivation.”

Asked by journalists about the oil reserves in Gabar, Donmez said, “As of now, there is a daily production of 7,800 barrels in 7 wells. Another exploration drilling is about to begin in the very close region. Currently, the tower is transferred to the region. If the weather conditions allow, we will start our drilling there as well. We hope to get results there in a few months.”
