Job Layoffs in Technology Companies Continue in 2024

Recent layoffs in global technology companies, which have been on the rise globally, continue in the first two months of 2024, according to information compiled by AA correspondent from Layoffs.fyi, which has been tracking job layoffs in the tech world since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Companies including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are still carrying out layoffs this year, albeit at a reduced rate compared to the previous year.

According to Layoffs.fyi data, 191 technology companies laid off 49,736 people in the first two months of the year. In the same period last year, approximately 130,000 people were laid off. Layoffs decreased by 61% compared to the same period last year. In 2023, the total layoffs in technology companies reached 263,000.

When layoffs are examined by sector, the highest number of layoffs, 6,916 people, occurred in technology companies operating in the retail sector. The consumer sector ranked second with 6,490 layoffs, followed by the finance sector with 4,335.

Artificial intelligence plays a significant role in job layoffs in technology companies. Many companies, including Google, carry out layoffs due to the technologies they develop.

In a statement by Google in January, it was stated, “Every year, we go through a rigorous process to restructure our team to provide the best service to our advertising customers. We match our customers with the right expert teams and sales channels to meet their service needs. As part of this, several hundred business lines worldwide are being eliminated, and affected employees can apply for open positions on the team or elsewhere at Google.”
