The share of renewable energy in electricity is increasing in Turkiye

The share of renewable energy in Turkiye’s electricity installed power has increased by 388 times in the last 21 years, reaching 24,821 megawatts at the end of 2022.

According to the data obtained from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the wind, geothermal and biomass installed power, which was 64 megawatts in total in 2002, has increased exponentially with the renewable energy policies developed in recent years.

Within the scope of the policies of meeting the ever-increasing energy needs of the country with the increasing population of the country, efforts to expand its industry, and reducing the current account deficit arising from the imports of fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas, with the development moves it has been following for the last 21 years, Turkiye has increased its renewable energy installed power by 388 times in the 2002-2022 period to 24,821 megawatts at the end of 2022. As of the end of May, the installed power reached 25,639 megawatts.

While Turkiye’s renewable energy installed capacity increased, its contribution to electricity generation also increased. According to May 2023 data, approximately 23% of the total electricity produced was provided by renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass.

For these purposes, in Turkiye, where the first biomass plant was established before 1940, the first geothermal power plant started operating in 1984, the first wind power plant in 1998 and the first solar power plant in 2014, respectively.

The largest capacity renewable energy facility is in Konya

According to the capacity of the 5 largest renewable energy facilities, most of which are licensed power plants, Konya ranks first with its solar power plant, followed by Istanbul and Manisa with its wind power plant.
