Although it is not consumed in Turkiye, chicken feet, which is one of the indispensable tastes of the Far East cuisine culture, reached $52 million 680 thousand in exports to China.
Chicken feet, which have an important place in China’s culinary culture, have become one of the most important export items of the Turkish chicken sector.
The importance of chicken feet, which is seen as a low-cost protein source and consumed extensively by making soup and frying in China, is increasing with the foreign currency it brings to the country.
According to the information compiled from the country-wide data of the Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Association, the export of poultry products in the last 12 months as of July reached $259 million with an increase of 139%.
Exports to Iraq, which is the most important market in the poultry industry, whose weight consists of whole and piece chicken products, increased by 219% to $99 million, while exports to China increased by 270% to $63 million.
The export of chicken feet, which is the leading export to China, increased by 355% in the last 1 year from 6 thousand 753 tons to 30 thousand 741 tons.
The amount of foreign currency that this product brought to the country increased by 359% from $11 million 453 thousand to $52 million 680 thousand in the same period.
The industry is growing day by day
Osman Gedik, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Usak-based company that exports chicken feet to China, emphasized that the sector is growing day by day and that Turkiye has risen to the 6th rank in exports.
Gedik explained that as a company, they managed to increase their share in the world market especially in the last 2 years, and that they exported almost 30% of their annual production of 200 thousand tons, and said that they evaluated the chicken down to its smallest piece.
“About 30% of our exports are chicken feet. The biggest buyer of chicken feet is China. 95% of the chicken feet produced in the world is bought by China. Last year, the pandemic affected us a little. This year there is a certain increase. When China is mentioned, it comes to mind. but we also send products from breast, thigh, drumstick and hip groups.”
